Shotokan Karate
Shotokan karate in Newfoundland was heavily influenced by two masters; Masami Tsuruoka and Hidetaka Nishiyama.
Master Masami Tsuruoka introducted karate to Newfoundland in the early 1970's. Tsuruoka was a student of Master Tsuyoshi Chitose. He activity taught karate here through seminars with the Newfoundland Karate Association from
1970 to 1985. Known as the "father of karate" in Canada, he introduced karate in Toronto in 1958 and organized Canadas first karate tournament in 1962.
He was a founding member of the National Karate Association, which formed in 1964. Master Tsuruoka created his own organization Tsuruoka Karate-Do Federation in 1974.
Master Hidetaka Nishiyama taught karate in Newfoundland through seminars with the Newfoundland Karate Association from 1985 to 2000. Nishiyama was a direct student of
O' Sensei Gichin Funakoshi. He helped establish the Japan Karate Association in 1949. In 1961 he moved to the United States and founded the All American Karate Federation (AAKF).
In 1985 he founded the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF) and was its first president. Through the ITKF Nishiyama Sensei was able to keep the budo aspect of karate in competition.
Sensei Michelle Critch, 4th dan, is the technical director and head coach for Nishiyama karate in Newfoundland under the World Traditional Karate-Do Federation. She was a
national and world champion karate competitor for many years. Sensei Critch is also a certified yoga instructor and a certified personal trainer. She operates the Exploits Traditional Karate
Club, Yoga & Fitness Studio in Grand Falls-Windsor.
Ryukyu Kobujutsu
Kobujutsu in Newfoundland was heavily influenced by two Sensei; Shane Hagashi and Derek Ryan.
Sensei Shane Higashi introduced Kobujutsu to Canada in 1974. He currently holds a 9th dan in Chito-Ryu, is the technical director of the CRKKA, and operates out of The Higashi School of Karate. In 1991, Sensei Higashi
received his 4th dan in kobujutsu from Master Kisho Inoue. In 1996 he help create the Canadian Ryukyu Kobudo Kobujutsu Association (CRKKA). The CRKKA is associated with the Ryukyu Kobujutsu Hozon Shin Ko Kai and is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Ryukyu classical martial arts in Canada.
Kobujutsu was introduced to Newfoundland by Sensei Derek Ryan of Avalon Kobujutsu in 1993. He is a student of Sensei Shane Higashi. Sensei Ryan is a 5th dan in Chito-Ryu Karate, 2nd dan in Ryukyu Kobujutsu, and operates out of Avalon Karate. He is the
Vice President of Chito-Ryu Canada, Vice President of Karate Canada, Vice President of the Canadian Kobujutsu Association, the director of Kobujutsu for Newfoundland, and has been teaching Kobujutsu in the province
for over 20 years.
